Even as the Telugu Desam Party leaders and cadres are on cloud nine
with their party president N Chandrababu Naidu completing 2,000 km of
padayatra, it is now the turn of YSR Congress party cadres to celebrate
the achievement of their leader Y S Sharmila.
Sharmila on Tuesday crossed 1,000 km milestone during her padayatra
in Nalgonda district. Despite the seven-week break that she has taken,
Sharmila has completed 1,012 km of marathon walking. On Tuesday,
however, she had to give a break to her padayatra at Vadapalli village
due to the restrictions imposed by the Election Commission. She would
camping in the village for the next three days.
For a woman, it is quite a big achievement to walk for such a long
distance. She is completely undeterred by the criticism that she was
doing a catwalk, rather than padayatra, to attract people and that her
padayatra was like a flop cinema which would still attract audiences to
the theatres.
Interestingly, Pradesh Congress Committee president Botsa Satyanarayana sought to ridicule the padayatras of Naidu and Sharmila.
“Naidu’s main objective of the padayatra is only to get into the
Guinness Book of Records, but not for understanding the people’s
problems. He and Sharmila have been crying hoarse over the failure of
the Congress government. But the recent cooperative society elections
are like a slap on their faces,” he said.
